About the Author
When Harrod Blank discovered that his 65 VW Beetle made a great canvas for self-expression, the result was Oh My God!, which became the catalyst for his eccentric career. Initially, Blank thought he was the only person in the world with an art car, but he soon met kindred enthusiasts all over America and began to document the artists and their cars, drawing on lessons from his father, filmmaker Les Blank, and the B.A. in Theater Arts/Film he obtained from the University of California in Santa Cruz. Blank s debut documentary film, Wild Wheels, was broadcast onPBS as a National Special in 1992 and his photography was featured in a companion book of the same name (1993, Pomegranate Artbooks/Blank Books). Blank also created Driving the Dream, a 30-minute documentary that premiered in 1997 on National Geographic Explorer. A feature-length sequel to Wild Wheels, entitled Automorphosis, will be released in the Spring of 2007. In 2006, Blank formed the non-profit museum, Art Car World, and the adjacent Rancho Del Arte, Inc., an alterna- tive arts residency and gallery in Douglas, Arizona, near the Mexican border. He also co-produces the annual ArtCar Fest in the San Francisco Bay Area. He is currently working on a 20 year feature documentary on the alternative arts festival known as Burning Man.
