From the Inside Flap:

Gardening is fun, and it can also be funny-all you need is good soil, water, sunshine, seeds, and a sense of humor. "Hollyhock Days" will introduce kids and grown-ups alike to the joys of nature through interesting facts, memories, heartwarming stories, garden plans and porjects.

Being a gardener doesn't require fancy tools and a big yard, says the book's author, Sharon Lovejoy, whose favorite gardening tool is a big kitchen spoon borrowed from her mother. The simple hands-on projects in "Hollyhock Days" foster a renewed and childlike sense of the wonders to be found in everyone's backyard.

You'll learn how to have fun with carrots, create a hollyhock tent, tickle sunflowers, make a caterpillar cave, wash with a squash, and much, much more. Adorned with delightful illustrations by Sharon, this light hearted volume is the ideal companion to her other books.

About the Author:

Sharon L. Lovejoy

Biography

Award winning naturalist and garden writer Sharon Lovejoy is the author and illustrator of three books that introduce children to nature through gardening. Her most recent book is Roots, Shoots, Buckets & Boots: Gardening Together with Children by Workman Publishing. Her first book, Sunflower Houses: Garden Discoveries for Children of All Ages (1991), has already been called a childrens garden classic. The American Library Book Review labelled her second book, Hollyhock Days: Garden Adventures for the Young at Heart (1994), a treasure.

For the past six years, Ms. Lovejoy has written and illustrated a feature column as a Contributing Editor for Country Living GARDENER magazine. Beginning in 1999, she will have a regular nature column for Northern New England Journey, a travel and lifestyle magazine.

In addition to her own books, Ms. Lovejoy contributed to Growing Fruits and Vegetables Organically (Rodale Press), Potpourri and Fragrant Crafts (Readers Digest), The Herb Tea Book (Interweave Press), and Herb Drying Handbook (Altamont Press). Her work has also appearred in Edible Gardens (American Express Publishing), Womans Day, Family Life, Country America, The American Horticulturist, The Herb Companion, Ranger Rick, and People, Places and Plants.

Ms. Lovejoy has been a consultant for the Readers Digest Association and a childrens garden design consultant for EDAW, one of the worlds leading landscape architectural firms, at the Red Butte Botanical Gardens in Salt Lake City, Utah, and the Cleveland Botanical Gardens in Ohio. In 1996, she was chosen to design the Childrens Gardening Pavilion for the highly respected Cincinnati Flower and Garden Show.

In 1999, she received the prestigious Quill and Trowel Award from Garden Writers Association of America (GWAA) for her magazine writing. For her contributions to education, she received the Key to the City of Indianapolis, Indiana, and the Gold Leaf Award from the Santa Clara Department of Education at the Kindergarten Forum in Saratoga, California. Her writings continue to be reprinted in educational publications in English and Spanish.

Her Quaker grandmother, a botanist and an educator, introduced her to the wonders of nature at an early age. Her passion for the natural world guided her to become a naturalist for the Morro Bay Museum of Natural History and for the Smithsonian Institute in the lagoons of Baja, California. As a graduate with Distinction in the Field of Art from San Diego State University, Ms. Lovejoy successfully combines her training in art with her love of botany and natural science.

She has lectured throughout the United States for over twenty years at conferences, educational symposia, museums, botanic gardens, arboreta, public and private educational institutions, and for professional trade associations and gardening organizations.

In 1995, Ms. Lovejoy served as President of the International Herb Association. Her other professional affiliations include Garden Writers Association of America, Society of Childrens Book Writers and Illustrators, The Authors Guild, Inc., Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance, International Herb Association, American Horticultural Society, and Herb Society of America.
