Humorist Samuel P. Davis journeyed West with printer's ink in his veins. Born in Connecticut in 1850, Davis moved to California when he was 22, working for the Vallejo "Independent," the San Francisco "Chronicle" and many others. Davis was too late for the Gold Rush, but in 1875 he followed the Silver Rush to Nevada, where he wrote for the Virginia City "Evening Chronicle," became the editor of the Carson City "Morning Appeal," and served as state controller. He is remembered best, however, for his many humorous sketches of life in the mining camps, stories that put him in a class with J. Ross Browne, Dan De Quille and Bret Harte as a comic chronicler of the West. In 1919, national recognition was given to his story, "The First Piano in Camp," which had appeared in an 1886 collection of short pieces as "A Christmas Carol." It is from this collection that our selection of frontier tales has been made.
