Author: Fred C. Collier - On July 6th, 1835, the Prophet Joseph Smith acquired a collection of ancient Egyptian mummies and scrolls and it was from these that the Book of Abraham was later produced. Over the years considerable study and investigation has been spent in order to analyze the Prophet's translation of Egyptian, but for the most part these efforts have not met with success. For this reason the Prophet's "Egyptian Alphabet and Grammar" has largely been ignored, and until the present, with the exception of anti-Mormon publications, it has never been published. Yet regardless of what may or may not be said about the Prophet's abilities as a translator, it is nonetheless still a fact that the "Alphabet and Grammar" is a virtual gold mine where it concerns matters of Doctrine and Theology, a great majority of which deals with the Prophet's Concept of the Patriarchal Order and Priesthood, as it existed in the days of Adam and the Patriarchs. This being the case, what is plainly written on the pages of this 1835 document has a tremendous bearing on the Prophet's concept of the Fulness of the Patriarchal Priesthood as he later taught and established it at Nauvoo in the Holy Order and Council of Fifty. This then is the purpose of this publication, to make this important document available to the inquiring mind - not for the study of Egyptian, but rather, for the study of the Prophet's doctrine on the Patriarchal Priesthood.
