10 1.5-hour cassettesFrom Library Journal:
Counsel to Richard Nixon, Dean offered sensational testimony about the Watergate break-in and its attempted cover-up that eventually drove the President from office. Dean's Blind Ambition laid out his side of the story, and that book is still the subject of controversy. He wrote this one in an attempt to fill in some of the blanks and also tell us what happened to him between his release from prison in 1975 and 1980. Probably the most interesting feature is Dean's speculation about the identity of "Deep Throat," the secret high-level source for much of what the Washington Post published during the scandal. Even today, there is no definitive exposure of this mystery person, who may be an amalgam of several people but most likely is a single, extremely clever individual. During the period covered by Lost Honor, Dean made a foray into journalism and became briefly famous again for describing an off-color racial joke by Secretary of Agriculture Earl Butz that caused Butz's resignation. The author also tells us a lot about his personal life, adding tidbits to his early biography and chronicling the rocky but steadying marriage to his wife, Mo. Narrator Edward Holland is gentle and thoughtful, and although there are no histrionics in a book such as this, he carries the tale well enough to hold the listener's attention. Mandatory for Watergate buffs and a nice choice for recent history collections.DDon Wismer, Cary Memorial Lib, Wayne, ME
