When circumstantial evidence implicates sixth-grader Doug and his friend Jesse as culprits in a jewelry store robbery, they try to solve the crime themselves. Their sleuthing takes them to Old Stone Fort, a local historical museum, where Doug encounters the ghost of a judge, "Three-Legged Willie," who vows, "Justice must be done!" This is the one really effective scene in the book. Jones makes an earnest, if clumsy, effort to depict life in Depression-era small-town Texas, bogging down the narrative in background detail. The mystery is rather predictable and at times strains credulity. In general, the adult characters seem remarkably gullible and naive; the police chief, in particular, is incredibly tolerant of the two boys' antics. --Ruth Sadasivan, Toledo-Lucas County Public Library, OH
