Chao Shao-an is especially noted for his talent in depicting birds, flowers, and insects. The renowned living master of the Lingnan school, an early in 20th-century movement to modernize Chinese painting, Chao Shao-an now lives in Hong Kong. The 80 paintings illustrated in this handsome volume include album studies, water buffalo, great bursts of azaleas, landscapes, and a portrait. The works are arranged chronologically within subject category, and represent a personal assessment of his achievements in visual effects, pictorial concepts, and scale. They record the artist's convictions about Chinese painting of the modem age and the Lingnan school.

ARTFrom Library Journal:
This catalog illustrates the innovative spirit to be found in 80 of Chao's paintings donated to the Asian Art Musuem of San Francisco. The most important representative of the second generation of the Lingnan (Cantonese) style in Chinese painting, Chao Shao-an has been called "the foremost propagator of the Lingnan style in Hong Kong and abroad." This catalog reviews each of Chao's subject areas?birds and flowers, birds and bamboo, insects, animals and landscapes?in full color. The first of two essays provides the historical and biographical circumstances under which the works were created, the other explains the tropical flora of southern China that fuses the paintings. All poems in the paintings are printed in Chinese and translated into English, with much needed explanationary notes for Western readers on the symbolic connotation of the painted subjects. Recommended for public and academic libraries with sizable collections on Chinese art.?Lucia S. Chen, NYPL
