This collection of short stories (with an emphasis on short) puts a modern-day twist on several old-fashioned tales, many of them allegories. Presented here are characters who learn that seeing is not always believing, so that a cloud of uncertainty hangs over them. They also learn that when they try to please others they wind up not pleasing anyone, least of all themselves. In many cases, the characters lack depth and seem hollow and superficial. But the clear, penetrating message of the stories more than makes up for this deficiency. The author, originally from Uruguay, now lives in Spain, where this book was first published in 1986. For general fiction and short story collections.
