Aliotta and Manhart, Leiden, 1981. Soft cover in wraps, 54 pp. [From Preface] In the present collection ofpapers, a painting is discussed that is little known and that never has been published. At first, it was planned that the various contributions to this book would be published separately as articles in magazines. But as research on the painting yielded results of no little interest, a publication of wider circulation seemed to be called for. Gradually, the idea of a collective, independent publication took shape, a publication that could also serve as a source of information for the visitor to the various exhibitions of the painting in a number of American museums. The editor wishes to express his gratitude to the publishers of this book; they made it possible to have all the relevant material printed and amply illustrated. Most of the credit for the coming into being of this book is due to Mr. William Manhart, who initially, with great pertinacity, succeeded in provoking the interest of the various authors in the painting that constitutes the subject of their research.
