Masters was born and grew up in Kansas City, Missouri. He served in the USN as a Naval correspondent and subsquently worked in NYC as a theatrical press agent;then founded a weekly newspaper in Hyde Park, N.Y. He is the author of eight novels, two collections of short fiction and this memoir. He has been a Fulbright lecturer to Finland and has been recipient of Yaddo fellowships and other awards. His short fiction and essays have been widely published and have been listed in both Best American and Pushcart. A recent essay is one of the Best Essays of l998 (Anchor-Doubleday) as selected by Philip Lopate
