Redslob asserts that the "sculpting" of the goldsmith represents like no other artistic discipline the unity of art and crafts. In separate chapters he writs about the Gothic, the Renaissance and the revival of ecclesiastic art and the development towards Baroque. Explanations of the plates, a list of plates and a bibliography conclude the written part, followed by sixty plates of ecclesiastic art, reproduced in lithography, from churches all across Germany.
