While Stephen Hilson grew up in Michigan, an extended stay with his brother in Alaska resulted in a love affair with the Pacific Northwest. He soon discovered that he could combine this love with his skills as a photographer and writer to make a living. He was fascinated by folklore of each new region he explored by land or by sea, and he spent hours researching the history of each area. At the age of 39, Stephen Hilson died in Seattle after a fairly short abattle with cancer, but his legacy of historical atlases lives on.
