Grade 3-5-- While each of these books has a main character who has an illness or disability, the stories are about typical childhood events. The stories read easily and are illustrated with simple line drawings. All include questions and answers about the disability, problem, or disease, plus a list of where to write for more information. In Hometown Hero , asthmatic Scott participates in sports and is on the sports banquet committee. When the featured speaker cancels, Scott invites Bill, a homeless man he has met in the library who just happens to be an old local football hero, to speak. As Scott wonders about this homeless man, he keeps a diary about his feelings and about his asthma so he can see what triggers his attacks. The plot is not very believable, but the information about how Scott reacts to his asthma is accurate. In On with the Show Brenda, whose parents are divorced, is the director of her fifth-grade music class' '50s and '60s show. She wants so much for the show to be perfect and for her : parents to come together that she almost ruins it. In the end, Brenda realizes that nothing is perfect and that there must be some give and take. A Portrait of Me is the story of a Greek girl who has diabetes. Christine has trouble getting along with her brother, and is upset when she is unable to attend a ballet because of a religious holiday. How she and her brother work out their problems, and how she comes to an understanding of her heritage is the focus of the book. Brian suffers from epilepsy in Trick or Treat or Trouble. This book connects the plot with the disease more than the others, as it deals with something the children are afraid of because they do not understand it. Brian enters a supposedly haunted house on a dare, and is then able to help his friends overcome their fears by helping them see and understand the house. This is a fairly successful Halloween story that also gives good information about a child with epilepsy. Although these books have very simple plots and sugar-coated endings, they do serve a purpose in showing that children's reactions are universal. --Margaret C.
