PhD in Germanic Linguistics (University of Texas, 1984). His research and teaching center on sounds and sound change, drawing data especially from historical and contemporary Germanic languages. With Rob Howell and Paul Roberge, he is writing the Cambridge History of the Germanic Languages. He is also Executive Editor of Diachronica: International Journal for Historical Linguistics, and Director of the Center for the Study of Upper Midwestern Cultures.
