Sea island cottonwas a product of the unique geology and climate of the sea islands of Florida, Georgia and South Carolina; the highly advanced (for its time) seed selection practiced by the sea island planters; and millions of years of evolution of the genus Gossypium to which all cotton belongs. This chapter presents aspects of the natural history of the sea islands that, in part, contributed to the uniqueness of sea island cotton.
