This publication describes the basics of Earth Sheltered House Design. A house built into the earth maintains a constant temperature between 60-70 degrees during the summer, requiring no cooling. During the winter the earth sheltered home already has a temperature of 40 degrees and only has to be heated 20-25 more degrees for a comfortable living environment. This can be accomplished with Passive Solar Heating on the southern exposure by the use of large energy-efficient windows acting as a sunspace or solarium. Modest back-up heat can also be supported by a free standing wood stove or thermostatically controlled electric baseboard heating. No need to install a costly HVAC system. So while an earth sheltered home may have a temperature range between 40-60 degrees that same home above ground can be subject to extreme temperature changes from -20 to 110 degrees. The energy savings on a earth sheltered home should be between 50-75%. (Publication includes 20 pages, 8-1/2 x 11, slip sheet bound with plastic covers)
