Kindergarten-Grade 2-- It was bound to happen--Waldo clones. The pleasant surprise is that in this case, they aren't too bad. The series features a different person or animal in each book. In addition to locating that character, children are given a checklist of different items to search for in each two-page spread. The scale of the pictures is slightly larger and less cluttered than those in the Waldo books, making this suitable for a younger audience. Humorous ballooned comments add to the slapstick humor and will keep older children amused. And while there is a lot of action in the pictures, there is less emphasis on the type of violence found in Handford's books. These titles lack the aesthetic appeal of Demi's Find the Animal ABC (Grosset, 1985) or Anno's Animals (Philomel, 1979), but they will fill a need for librarians who cannot keep Waldo on the shelves. --Lori A.
