Many news and professional articles that we have read about the Pittsburgh Neighborhood of Atlanta, Georgia over the years have been negative. In every case, residents and others who grew up in Pittsburgh were aghast, because in most cases the reports were not consistent with our experiences. These reports were startling because they all dealt with poverty, crime, violence, fear, insecurity and, seemingly, states of helplessness. Since our experiences were so different, we decided that it would be worthwhile to let the residents, former residents and people who have worked in the Pittsburgh Neighborhood speak. It seemed to us that this was especially important since most of the reports were being presented by those whose “lived experiences” occurred primarily outside of the Pittsburgh Neighborhood. Richard Moriba Kelsey, Ph.D., a former resident, believes that many African American communities have been deliberately denigrated, intentionally or unintentionally through negative reports which frequently are contrary to the way residents view themselves.
