From the Introduction by Rabbi Abraham Cooper: On November 10, 1997 President Bill Clinton brought together over three hundred experts to discuss the changing face of hate in America. The need for such a gathering comes as the number of self-proclaimed racist and other extremist groups continues to grow-this despite the fact that the Unites States is currently enjoying low unemployment and the longest sustained period of economic growth in three decades. Old racists are employing new tactics, symbols, and language designed to better capitalize on the fears of citizens who, in the past, spurned the idea of saluting the swastika or burning cross on a neighbor's lawn. These new strategies have borne fruit. Almost overnight, tens of thousands of Americans have been attracted to a new movement with a harsh anti-government and conspiratorial bent. And while not every member of the so-called militias is a racist, it is a movement heavily influenced by long-time extremists. The Internet provides a new sense of community and empowerment for racists and other extremists. They have hundreds of web sites enabling them to promote their agenda in an attractive, yet unassailable way. This includes music CDs and voluminous and accurate information on bomb making and other terrorist activities. The New Lexicon of Hate touches on these troubling trends and developments. It also provides new insights into the Skinhead movement, including unique language and tattoos used to celebrate their violent acts and intimidate their foes. It is hoped that this publication will help families, clergy, law enforcement, the military, and the media, to be better equipped to recognize today's symbols and symptoms of bigotry.
