Anna Sofaer found the now-famous "Sun Dagger" petroglyph site on a desert butte high above Chaco Culture National Historical Park at Summer Solstice in 1977, leading to 30 years research into the meaning of ancient Chaco's astonomical expressions. Chaco Astronomy brings together all the major findings of Solstice Project's many researchers, changing forever the understanding of a place often called "America's Stonehenge"
Nine revealing chapters explore the sophisticated lunar and solar alignments of major buildings, implications of the Great North Road, a remarkable digital reconstruction of the Sun Dagger site, and more. Richly illustrated with photos, charts, maps, and diagrams.
Sofaer and the highly qualified science team of the Solstice Project struggled to overcome resistance to their findings by an entrenched archaeological establishment. As deeper investigations provided more and more substance to her findings, Sofar now stands tall as one of the great pioneers of American archaeoastronomy.

Anna Sofaer found the astonishing "Sun Dagger" petroglyph site high on a butte in New Mexico's Chaco Canyon in 1977. At summer solstice, a shaft of light perfectly bisects a spiral petroglyph there. Chaco is an elaborate construction of buldings and other structures by the ancestral Pueblo people, abandoned mysteriously in the late 12th Century.Sofaer has led a team of researchers on a 30-year scientific odyssey, during which solar and lunar alignments of Chacoan buildings were recognized, as well as spiritual implications of the enigmatic and extensive Chaco road system. The Chaco complex has been called "America's Stonehenge"About the Author:
Anna Sofaer graduated from Sarah Lawrence College and worked previously in social planning and the arts before joining an archaeological field team in New Mexico. Following her encounter with the remarkable archaeoastronomy site on Fajada Butte, she founded the Solstice Project in 1978 in Washington, D.C. Sofaer coordinates and documents the interdiciplinary reserarch of the Solstice Project team, which includes Pueblo educators and historians.
In 1982 Sofaer produced, directed and co-wrote The Sun Dagger, a documentary narrated by Robert Redford and broadcast nationally by PBS and the Discovery Channel. In 2000 she produced The Mystery of Chaco Canyon, also narrated by Redford and telecast by PBS and the National Geographic Society. Currently her Solstice Project is studying relationships between Chacoan expressions of astronomy and those of Mesoamerican cultures.
