He came out of America's "Greatest Generation," those born in the 1920s, survived the Great Depression and fought in the world's last big war. He was born and raised in a rural mining town in New Jersey and went on to make history in the world of aviation. Inducted into the New Jersey Aviation Hall of Fame and the New Jersey Inventors Hall of Fame, Charles Fletcher's important contributions finally brought him much deserved recognition. He faced death more than once and miraculously survived. He was one of the best Navy fighter pilots of World War II, surviving two plane crashes in the Pacific Ocean. Later his Hellcat was forced down at sea where he floated for nearly three days before being rescued by a liberty ship that was not supposed to be in the area.
After the war he graduated from the Academy of Aeronautics, invented the Hovercraft, worked on the test version of the Lunar Landing Mofdule, and invented the world's smallest rocket engine. He soon started his own business and expanded his industrial base over the next fifty years.Review:
