Previously titled The American Historical Supply Catalogue (Schocken Books, 1984), this expanded compendium offers sources of hundreds of newly manufactured reproductions of nineteenth-century items. Wellikoff is a contributor to popular magazines, including Esquire and Smithsonian.
Represented are replicas (items copied as they were made in the past), reproductions (things made from resurrected old molds, formulas, or plans), and goods that have been in continual production. Items have been selected for inclusion based on accuracy of reproduction as well as historical and utilitarian interest.
Chapters focus on building supplies and fixtures, housewares, farm and garden items, photographic goods, musical instruments, food, remedies and toilet articles, and nautical items. For example, "Decoration" lists producers of lithographs on canvas, sampler kits, and Victorian wallpapers; "Vehicles & Harness" notes manufacturers of wagon wheels, engraved brass sleigh bells, and big-wheeler bicycles. While the address and telephone number of the manufacturer and the availability of a catalog are given, not all prices are listed. A list of suppliers and manufacturers and a product index complete the work.
Other sources list newly manufactured items from the past, but none offer the diversity of this book. Grief's Lighting Book (Main Street Press, 1986) is a buyer's guide to suppliers of period, traditional, and modern lighting devices. The Renovator's Supply Catalog (Millers Falls, Massachusetts 01349, free catalog 1-800-659-2211) offers replicated items for the home from faucets and tubs to architectural accents and lighting.
The Historical Supply Catalogue is both a buying guide and a view into the social and technological history of the nineteenth century and will be useful in public libraries, either on the reference or on circulating shelves.
