Grade 1-3-This story mixes ponderous explanation, deliberately cute wordplay, and oddly adult concerns. The rambling plot follows two mice, Bert and Mavis, from their childhood and courtship (mercifully brief) in the basement of a museum in St. Louis; through their relocation to the West Coast; the birth of their two children, Louise and Clark (yep, named after the explorers); and the family's ultimate adventure, a mishap-filled experience on Cannon Beach in Oregon. The motivation for this adventure, an attempt by Louise and Clark to collect a bit of seawater for their father, is particularly peculiar. It stems from their belief that an earlier disastrous encounter with a seagull on the beach has left poor Dad with a form of post-traumatic stress disorder. The adventure itself, including Louise and Clark's efforts and their father's daring rescue, is engaging if contrived. By itself, it might have made an entertaining picture book. Alas, Sunderland's amateurish pencil drawings can't compensate for the text's inadequacies. While Waugh's apparent theme of overcoming obstacles to reach one's dreams is a worthy one, readers will wish he'd found a more successful way to present it.
