Within two generations after Muhammad's death, the sciences of his biography and of the Qur'an separated. Subsequently, nearly all works on the origins of Islam can be divided into those based primarily on the biographical "Sira" traditions or those which favor Qur'anic research. Not infrequently, the information from even the earliest known forms of Sira traditions disagrees with the witness of the Qur'an, yet there are many passages in the Qur'an which cannot be understood without such traditions. Here an attempt is made at integrating the Sira traditions, Qur'anic research, and many other sources to obtain a better understanding of the origins and development of Islam.
