An expose of the role of the US-based tobacco corporations Philip Morris and RJR Nabisco in aggressively promoting tobacco internationally, contributing to the deaths of 3.5 million people worldwide per year. Filled with examples of manipulation of public policy and big Tobacco's disregard for advertising restrictions in other countries, Global Aggression builds a case for a combination of consumer pressure and world standards to stop the spread of tobacco-related diseases and hold tobacco transnationals accountable. From INFACT's 1998 Annual Report (now Corporate Accountability International)

From the Author:

The photos on the cover are part of INFACT's Human Toll of Tobacco project-a collection of photos and stories of people who are suffering or have died from tobacco-related illnesses. The Human Toll of Tobacco Project began in response to Congressional testimony by a former RJR Nabisco executive that the people who die each year from tobacco are just "computer-generated numbers." Photos have come in from all over the US and many regions of the world, and are part of a 200-foot long banner. The banner made a memorable debut at the Philip Morris and RJR Nabisco Annual Meetings in the Spring of 1995. The display is now being used in public events from New Mexico to Beijing, China, from New York to Santiago, Chile, calling on tobacco industry leaders and their political allies to account for their role in this preventable epidemic.

About the Author:

Founded in 1977, INFACT is a non-partisan national organization whose purpose is to stop life-threatening abuses of transnational corporations and increase their accountability to people around the world. With 21 years of experience, INFACT is a key organization challenging "business as usual" in the political arena. The Hall of Shame Campaign began in 1996 by shining a spotlight on corporate influence and access in the US elections. To date, five corporations have been formally inducted through public events: Philip Morris, RJR Nabisco, Dow Chemical, Waste Management, and Columbia/HCA Healthcare. INFACT activist leaders are widely exposing the human toll of corporate power throughout our political system, and confronting Board members and other top decision makers of Hall of Shame corporations with the impact of their abusive practices on public health, the environment, and democracy.
