Kindergarten-Grade 4--Tanya , written in both English and Spanish, tells of a girl who is dreaming of monsters and having problems at school. She and her mother are advised to visit a therapist. The descriptions of these sessions are the book's strength; Tanya is encouraged to role play in front of a therapist, and all ends happily. Black-and-white drawings depict a black family and a female therapist. Wish concerns a girl whose mother is mentally ill. It seems strange that the woman would be in the household alone with the child when it is clear that she is ill and on medication. She goes away, but readers never really learn how the situation is resolved. The story does provide a good picture of children's feelings, but it will require adult explanations. Potty is of limited use as the language and forced rhymes are better suited to older children who are already toilet trained. The fears expressed are genuine, especially in the full-color pictures, but are not conveyed in young children's terms in the text. Other titles about potty training are more relevant for this audience. These books might be useful to therapists and counselors, but only if they know the children's problems, what they understand, and what will help them. --Margaret C.
