Grade 1-3-- Third in a series of adventures of LoneStar Bear, this is a set of short chapters about the rescue of a Native American bear tribe. LoneStar and his sidekick, Barney, are on a fishing vacation when they come to the aid of a lady Native American bear who is being stalked by a mountain lion. Two braves (who sound like Tonto from the Lone Ranger ) tell the bears, "You come to see Chief." Among the cast is a John Wayne-like bear ("Who might you be, pilgrim?") who helps LoneStar and Barney track down some missing sheep. Other than the colorful illustrations, there is little to recommend this story with colloquial language, slight plot, and meager characterization. Native Americans might well find the bear dress, actions, language, and ceremonies, reminiscent of some old television westerns, to be quite offensive, and girls may be disgusted by the portrayal of the helpless, lovely maiden bear. There is nothing to offset the negative stereotyping, and what humor there is may not be understood by the intended audience. --Yvonne Frey, Peoria Public Schools, IL
