Synopsis

This book is from the Picasso exhibition at the Musee National d’Art Moderne in Paris from February – May 1988 and The Tate Gallery in London from June – September 1988. The final eight or nine years are probably the most controversial period of Picasso’s life as a painter. Many people, including many of his faithful admirers, felt that his art was going into decline – that it was tired, sloppy, banal and pathetically obsessed with sex. In recent times the public has begun to revise that opinion; younger artists have been to the fore (David Hockney has been perhaps the most vocal) in saying that this was really one of Picasso’s most fertile and amazing periods. Published to accompany the major exhibitions in Paris and London, LATE PICASSO focuses our attention on this industrious period of Picasso’s art. The intimate relationship between the artist and his model, and the bold colours and freedom with which Picasso has approached his subject are both stimulating and provocative. Five essays by distinguished art historians and critics, together with a fully illustrated biography, offer the reader fascinating insights into Picasso’s life and work during the years 1953-1973. Over 100 works are illustrated in colour.
