This is a revised and renamed edition of the three-volume Dictionary of Irish Writers , edited by Brian Cleeve (Ireland: Mercier, 1967-1971). The present edition is one volume in two parts: the first lists writers in the English language, the second those in Irish and Latin. Brief biographical sketches are given for more than 1800 authors of fiction and nonfiction as well as compact bibliographies of the authors' primary works. Though special attention is given to present-day writers, over 1500 years of Irish writing are represented. This reference work is essential for identification of major and minor Irish writers and is a vital supplement to the more critical Dictionary of Irish Literature , edited by Robert Hogan ( LJ 9/1/79), which treats only 500 authors.
