John Gamble (1770-1831) was a medical doctor and travel writer. Editor Breandan Mac Suibhne is a historian of society and culture in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Ireland; he teaches in Centenary College, New Jersey. He is editor, with David Dickson, of Hugh Dorian's Outer Edge of Ulster (2000, 2001), and, in 2005-09, he was one of the editors of Field Day Review, a journal of political and literary culture.Review:
'... a rough daring freedom of expression, a sort of impudent assumption to talk about any thing, in any manner, any where; a rude reeling sort of versatility, that frolics and flounders this way and that, without design or rule, or ceremony or civility. He jokes, and moralizes, and rants, and sings, and jigs, and kicks, all in the space of five minutes.' --Eclectic Review, 10 (September 1813)
'John Gamble's accounts of trips home to Ireland in 1810, 1812 and 1818 confounded British critics as much for what he said as how he said it. His deftly re-created encounters with people of all ranks, and his exposition of their experiences and expectations, laid bare the 'diseased state of public feeling' in a country that, by many of his readers lights, should have been quietly enjoying the blessings of union with Great Britain. ... This splendid edition is an immense resource for all students of society and culture in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Ireland.' --Prof. Kerby A. Miller, University of Missouri
