Three clever billy goats outwit a big, ugly troll that lives under the bridge they must cross on their way up the mountain.

From School Library Journal:

PreSchool-Grade 1 Hellard has changed the ending that children have loved for generations; when the troll hits the cold and icy water, fear causes him to change his ways, and he sappily invites the Gruff goats to "cross anytime." There's little rhythm or repetition in this grating retelling. At one point, the wimpy troll blandly replies to the goats, "Oh, all right, but I can't wait much longer"hardly a line to spark anticipation in the minds of young listeners. The crudely drawn illustrations have none of the appeal found in the versions by Paul Galdone (Clarion, 1973) or Marcia Brown (HBJ, 1957), and the flaps that reveal the troll under the bridge when lifted are more gimmicky than surprising. A strong old favorite, retold so poorly that it's enough to get your goat. Trev Jones,"School Library Journal"

From Publishers Weekly:

The traditional tale of the three hungry goats gets a modern twist here. This super-ogreish punk troll has green and purple hair, and brandishes cooking utensils like weapons while he reads goat recipes. Children will enjoy the book's lift-the-flap elementcardboard flaps throughout the story reveal the threatening lout who promises to gobble up the goats. Lovers of the more nature-oriented versions might be disappointed by the minimal use of grassy greens and bubbling brooks, though Hellard does make a refreshing departure from the original ending. After being butted over the bridge by the biggest goat, this troll returns "a changed troll." He now bakes cookies and shares his bridge with the goats, leaving plenty of food for all.
