-- Table of Poems from Poem Finder®

From Library Journal:

Both these highly readable anthologies are poetic documentations of what poet/editor Forche calls the "extremity" of the 20th century: a sad chronicle of world wars, civil wars, famine, genocide, and suppression of basic human rights. Considering the present conditions in Somalia, Ethiopia, Bosnia, the Sudan, South Africa, and El Salvador, these anthologies are utterly appropriate. Yet there are important differences between the two works. If From the Republic of Conscience is a good thing, with its 138 poems and 192 pages of text, Against Forgetting is even more bountiful, with 382 poems occupying a weighty 800 pages. Flattley and Wallace-Crabbe worked under the specific sponsorship of Amnesty International, and their seven groupings of poems tend to be topical, as does their introduction. Forche, on the other hand, is working on a broader canvas and places her 15 groups of poems, each with its own introduction, in a kind of historical sequence that begins with the Armenian genocide and concludes with the recent attempts at revolution in China. Both anthologies contain traditional poets (like W.H. Auden) and more revolutionary ones (like Wole Soyinka and Dennis Brutus). Every poem points an accusing finger at tyrants, murderers, cowards, and their accomplices--no one is spared, because, in the words of Brazilian poet Ferreira Gullar, "Poetry... respects nothing." Most highly recommended.
