Julian Edgar started his working life freelancing for photography magazines. He then worked as a secondary school teacher for eight years, teaching humanities, before leaving teaching and becoming a full-time automotive writer.
He edited a national Australian automotive print magazine before becoming editor of AutoSpeed, an online car magazine. Along the way he wrote extensively for Silicon Chip, an electronics hobbyist magazine, while contributing articles to publications in Australia, the UK and the US on cars, model railways, cycling and renewable energy.
Books by the author:
Street Machine magazine said that it "goes for the technical jugular swiftly" and "covers a lot of ground, starting from fundamental theory to affordable modifications and home-grown budget how tos." The magazine said "its quality is light years ahead of the common 'photocopied cardboard' looks typical of similar-style publications that the public is expected to swallow", and that it's "a comprehensive guide to the anatomy of local performance hardware (that) should spark inspiration for both beginners and veterans alike."
The review in Performance Build-Ups magazine included lines such as "Edgar takes readers through the basics of each subject and then effortlessly (almost) introduces more advanced aspects as you progress through the chapter", and "no matter what criteria you use, this book would have to be on the (buying) shortlist". The review concluded: "There's only one thing wrong with this book: I didn't write it!".
This book is written for the amateur driver, not the racing professional, who aims to improve and boost his car's performance by making modifications from as simple as changing to aluminium alloy wheels, to as complex as moulding the engine's air-intake manifold, changing cam-shafts and adapting the car's lateral-acceleration gauge to control the car's electronics. It's written in easy-to-follow language, full of diagrams and pictures, and well worth it's money. The only negative point being that it occasionaly uses odd units.
Ive had this book for years, and a review is long overdue. Pity it seems out of print now !
For anyone wishing to learn about modern performance cars, engine management, building and tuning a performance car you will not find a better book to get you started.
It is written in easy to understand format, good quality pictures when required, and gives superb coverage of all aspects of tuning and performance in an easy to read and understand way.
Hopefully they'll republish it or make it available on Kindle for more to see
The author goes into just about every aspect of tuning from tires to aerodynamics. Some areas he dives in to more theroughly (engine) and others he leaves to a more general description(aero).
I think this is a very good book for the enthusiast wanting to learn more about all aspects of tuning and modifying any performance car. For the more learned enthusiast, it's probably a bit repetitive, but still a lot of useful info in there.
I give this book 4.5/5
