Sarah Dagley makes such a poor showing during her debut in Regency society that she leaves London unmarried and expecting to remain so all her life. She is totally unprepared for an offer she then receives from a highly eligible bachelor - the widowed Miles, Earl of Winterton.

After a failed coming-out in London society, with hopes of marriage shaken, unassuming Sarah Dagley happily retires to her family's shabby home in the country and her life of managing the estate and caring for her relatives. Her uncle, a reverend, arranges a marriage of convenience for Sarah with the oh-so-handsome-and-eligible Miles, Earl of Wilberton, who's a bit of a ninny. The bright spot, however, is Miles's cousin Freddy, who's the smartest one of the troupe. Such a tired plot could be workable, but this one is not. The prose is tedious, the characters dull, and the reader wants to shake Miss Dagley and her Earl until their teeth rattle. Paula M. Zieselman, M.L.S., Debevoise & Plimpton, New York
