Book Description Dorset Publishing Company, 1989. Hardcover / Hardback. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First edition. Hardback. SIGNED. The watercolour by Lawson Wood on the front cover, sums up the popular perception of the policeman at the close of the 19th century. In deep countryside the level of crime was usually a triviality by standards that have come to be the norm 100yrs later. Here the author tells the story of his great-grandfather, constable No. 1 of the Dorset Police, through contemporary records. These illustrate the concerns of a very different England and one where the values put property before people. Lopping a hedge carried a higher fine than whipping a baby. The book is seen through the career of Richard Hann (1830-1904). He started with his own brush with the law, a rape-charge in his pre-police youth whilst working at Charborough House, but goes on to serve in villages and country towns across Dorset - Sturminster Newton, Cerne Abbas, Winterborne Whitechurch, Piddlehinton, Blandford, Cranborne, Verwood, Wimborne, Alderholt, Sixpenny Handley, Winterborne Kingston and Child Okeford. Alcoholism was the countryside's major pursuit, though it was then called drunkenness, and the temptation for the odd drink put Richard Hann himself in trouble on a couple of occasions. He emerges from the author's study as a counterpoint to the cosy view of the English countryside that has come to us from the romantic poets and the diaries of Francis Kilvert. You have here the other side of the picture. Illus., Richard Hann's Career Summary, Index of Names + Sources. 128pp. 8vo. h/back. With Addendum to p.40. SIGNED AND DATED BY THE AUTHOR. F. in F. dw. Scarce. signed by author. Seller Inventory # 16691
