Reviews

In his coffee-table book, Australian architectural photographer Bingham-Hall beautifully documents the Sydney 2000 Olympic venue at Homebush Bay. Originally the site of the State Abattoir (slaughterhouse) and State Brickworks, Homebush Bay has been transformed into an environmentally sustainable symbol of the Green Games, the nickname of this summer!s Olympics. The text and photography detail the project from initial concept designs to actual construction and completion. A chapter is devoted to each of the more than 20 structures required for the Olympic events. While this book provides more information than is required by the casual sports enthusiast, the excellent photography makes it valuable on several levels and for several audiences. To most Americans, the words architecture and Sydney evoke a single image: the Sydney Opera House. Jahn, an architect and Sydney city planner, reveals the richness of Sydney!s architectural history by offering many more examples in this book, which is similar in concept and format to various architectural guides published by local chapters of the American Institute of Architecture. Divided into five sections that closely resemble American architectural periods (Colonial, Victorian, Arts & Crafts, Modern, and Contemporary), the text includes detailed historical, architectural, and sometimes anecdotal information on more than 500 buildings. Simple floor plans and black-and-white photographs illustrate many of the structures. Additional sections provide a glossary of architecture-related terms, short biographies of Sydney architects, and eight mapped tours of Sydney neighborhoods. A time line along the top of each page gives insight into important Australian historical and social events. Both books are essential for all architectural collections; Bingham-Hall!s work is well suited to larger general collections, especially those anticipating interest in the Sydney 2000 Olympics; Jahn!s book is highly recommended to supplement travel and history collections for most libraries."Jay Schafer, Bay Path Coll.
