Hardcover. Condition: VG+. Dust Jacket Condition: VG+. Photos (illustrator). Reprint. This evotative book, sub-titled "Australia's Golden Age of Passenger Ships" recalls the time when ocean liners, not air-liners, provided the means to travel beween the northern and southern hemispheres. Bremer's book includes more that 20 lines that provided this service, basically covering from the beginiing of the 1900s to the 1970s, when liner travel was fast disppearing. Some of the lines are famed names in shipping, for others the relationship was fleeting. As well as scheduled liner services betweem Australian, the UK, Europe and North America the book also examines Australian coastal passenger services and ventures which were chiefly involved in the carriage of immigrants. While dealing mainly in an Australian context many of the lines and their ships also called at NZ ports and among the companies included are Huddet Parker, Matson and Union Steam Ship. Lines are listed alpabetically and information on ships include ownership history, names sequence, routes, operational history, builder, propulsion, tonnage, dimensionas and maximum speed. A grand book for the liner buff. First printed 1984, this first reprint 1986. 224 pages including index.
