Hardcover. Condition: Used: Acceptable. Condition good with dust jacket. ref ZKVQ Kevin Walton went to the Antarctic at the end of the war as part of the newly formed Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey. He took part in the re-supply of four existing bases and helped establish a new base in Marguerite Bay. The base party built their own house and spent their first year training themselves and their dogs to live and travel in this inhospitable country. In the second year they were joined by an expedition from the United States (21 men and two women). Jointly the parties combined to do extensive survey work on the East coast and at the same time a purely British party sledged in 500 miles from a Northern base. It is not the accounts of dangers and hardships which makes this book so enthralling it is the descriptions of how the expedition lived and worked; how they built and organised their base and how they worked out a sound routine for planning and executing their field journeys. Old Sellotape markings where dust jacket had previously been stuck to book, contents clean. A personal account of two years spent in British Antarctica, in the second year they were joined by an American expedition and later combined to complete an extensive survey of the East Coast of the Graham Land peninsula, includes detail of how the expedition actually lived in Antarctica, how they organised their base, trained their dog teams and carried out their work. This is a fascinating account of Kevin Walton's trek to Antarctica in the late 1940s. It is written in such a way as to enable his readers in their imaginations to share in his experiences. He gives a vivid and authentic impression of what it really feels like to be a member of a polar expedition - to be wintering in a base hut or to be sledging with dogs (perhaps the most exhilarating part of such an expedition).
