Book Description Portobello, 1988. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Mention to knowledgeable motor racing fans the names of Nuvolari, Caracciola, Varzi, Campari, and Birkin, and their eyes will light up with pure admiration for those men who were among the greatest ever to drive a car in anger. These drivers have something else in common —they each raced in Ireland — alongside such famous names as world record breakers Malcolm Campbell, George Eyston and John Cobb, the popular Prince Bira, Rene Dreyfus, and Jean-Pierre Wimille. The Irish road races also featured the great French pioneer Rene de Knyff; Fernand Gabriel, winner of the last great city-to-city race, the 1903 Paris-Madrid; and the wild Camille Jenatzy, the first person to drive a car at a mile a minute. Irish drivers and drivers of Irish origin also won many international honours, including America's first successful driver Joe Tracy, Hugh Hamilton who scored MG's first major continental success and Henry Segrave of Wicklow and Tipperary, in his day the fastest man on land and water and the first to travel at 200 mph. This book relates their exploits as well as recording every Irish speed competition race, hill climb, sand event and speed trial from 1900 to 1939, events such as the Phoenix Park Races, Tourist Trophy, Irish Grand Prix, Leinster Trophy, Limerick Round the Houses and Cork Grand Prix. A tabulated results index at the rear of the publication also covers the smaller events such as the1903 Clough Speed Trial, and many of the photographs used are published here for the first time Near fine book in a very good/near fine dust jacket protected by a Brodart clear removable cover. Dedication by the author inside from cover, please refer to photographs. Signed by Author(s). Bookseller Inventory # ABE-14978459912
