The Bullies' Predatory Footprint (Nonfiction)

  • Like sharks safe in the dark fathoms of the sea to prey on targets, The Bullies' Predatory Footprint looks at the vast, opportunistic, cruel, and predatory behaviour of bullying that is exercised to repress and maintain an ascendancy of dominance, power, and control over others. Reducing human value, costing billions a year in terms of lost productivity, damaged relationship, traumatized victims, and the fraying of the tenuous fabric of respect and dignity that holds society together. The book examines how bullying permeates schools, workplaces, institutions, cyberspace, the elderly, and society in general. Referencing hundreds of experts from the specialist subject area of bullying, the book identifies dysfunctional rules of engagement, self defence strategies to protect against the behaviour and the need for cultural changes and power shifts. International studies and surveys from across the globe exposes the dearth of regulation, and the comparative inadequacy of policies from - governments to trade unions - who shirk their responsibility to protect individuals from the detrimental effects of the behaviour.
  • Harrying many young and vulnerable people to suicide, the clarion cry from communities, families, and friends touched and disabled by its impact is reduced to little more than a humanitarian reflex when social, economic, and cultural changes are not followed up by legitimised actions.
  • Contradictions at the core of moral and democratic values are made evident as the cumulative imprint of hostile and cruel behaviour casts a long shadow on civil society. Unanswerable questions to posterity and a lack of human response may seem perplexing to the next generation of people born into an inherited form of entrapment.
Finding Solutions and Fostering an Anti-Bullying Culture
  • Providing parents and students with an understanding of the dynamic of school bullying and cyberbullying and supporting the need for Self Defence strategies to protect children against the behaviour.
  • Providing Unions and Human Resource managers with a broad research base into the prevention and management of psychosocial risk behaviour, enabling practical solutions to foster enterprise and productivity and ensure employees are protected from workplace bullying.
  • Providing a readable reference guide to Libraries and Third-Level Institutes, to help further studies into the specialist area of bullying.
  • Encouraging a climate and culture of enterprise, learning, accountability, respect and healthy social interaction, while discouraging the multifarious, pernicious, insidious, and all-pervasive destructive behaviour of bullying in society.
  • Helping to focus advocacy groups and policy makers by presenting surveys and studies from throughout the world on the policies and legislation currently in place to protect against unwanted and cruel conduct, and detailing the financial, emotional, and psychological costs to society.

About the Author:

Terri qualified as a Science teacher at the National University of Ireland teaching Science for several years. After qualifying in Management Terri began a career in the Soft Chemical Industry going on on to become a Senior Personnel and Marketing Manager with a multi-national company. Later Terri qualified as an Enterprise Instructor helping people to start their own business and continues to run courses in Enterprise and Anti-bullying, while completing her Ph.D. studies in Psychology and Legal Studies. Terri's current book The Bullies' Predatory Footprint, takes a looks at the vast, opportunistic, cruel, and predatory behaviour of bullying and the cumulative impact this legacy of behaviour leaves for future generations. Terri has become a significant figure in helping people to clarify and resolve problems of bullying. She travels to Europe, the USA, Canada, and Australia giving talks and courses on the topic to employers and employees, the elderly, schools, parents, and survivors of abusive relationships.

Review:

Reviewed by Katelyn Hensel for Readers' Favorite - 4 Stars

The media has never been more focused on bullying and Terri Ryan writes with timeliness and conviction in The Bullies' Predatory Footprint.  From gun violence in schools, to quiet suicide, this book takes a hard look at some of the social and institutional causes of bullying to explore a better path. A very intelligent book that will be a great tool towards understanding the complexities around bullying, Ryan shows us there has to be more than just a community outcry there has to be a social shift and changes in culture.

ForeWord Clarion Reviews-USA   Barbara Bamberger Scott -4 Stars ****

In a compendium that could be used as a reference on this important subject The Bullies' Predatory Footprint presents valuable information in dense prose and well-chosen cartoons to illustrate the book's purpose. Highlighting national and international strategies to decry and prevent bullying, Ryan supports the text with statistics from across many social sectors, and case histories from international sources, offering thought-provoking material that could aid in preventing this prevalent and disturbing problem.

Diane Donovan for Midwest Book Reviews  -  Top Recommendation

The Bullies' Predatory Footprint tackles the cultural phenomenon of bullying which permeates institutions and society as a whole. Charting the psychological and detrimental effects of bullying from co-workers to the elderly, the book goes far beyond most other discussions on the subject, and is a top recommendation for anyone interested in understanding the nature, prevalence, and lasting effects of bullying.

Book Description International Development and Information Guides, Ireland, 2013. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English. Brand new Book. Like sharks safe in the dark fathoms of the sea to prey on targets, the Bullies' Predatory Footprint looks at the vast, opportunistic, cruel, and predatory behaviour of bullying that is exercised to repress and maintain an ascendancy of dominance, power, and control over others. Harrying many young and vulnerable people to suicide, the clarion cry from communities, families, and friends touched and disabled by its impact is reduced to little more than a humanitarian reflex when social, economic, and cultural changes are not followed up by legitimised actions. Contradictions at the core of moral and democratic values are made evident as the cumulative imprint of hostile and cruel behaviour casts a long shadow on civil society.
