Book Description London, England: Ellery/Browns/Westerham Press, 2005. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 280 pages. Published in 2005. Collection of graphic design sources and inspirations. One of the best books on graphic design, photography, and contemporary art every produced in our time. Limited Edition of 200 slipcased copies. The edition was published as part of (and should not be confused with) the Limited Edition of 2000 copies. The Limited Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Jonathan Ellery and his studio, Browns/London: Oversize-volume format. The production is a brilliant cross between a textbook and an Artist Book. Pictorial hard boards, as issued. Books, works of art, signs, vernacular ephemera, and other materials selected by Jonathan Ellery. Foreword by Adrian Shaughnessy. Folded poster by Lawrence Weiner completely intact and laid-in. Pristine-white cloth slipcase with black titles embossed on one side. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in London to the highest standards. In white DJ with black titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Jonathan Ellery's "136 Points of Reference". A definitive, indispensable guide to modern graphic design. Idiosyncratic, engaging, and instructive selection of books and other printed matter that have served (for him and his legendary studio, Browns/London) as example, inspiration, and reference. "Examines the influences that have informed and defined his and the studio's work. These range from rare art and photography books to assorted ephemera" (Publisher's blurb). Graphic design is a commercial enterprise. It is the high-end, "boutique" equivalent of the more mundane Art Department of global advertising agencies, what the latter or their clients turn to when they need to get the job done well. As such, it is just as hindered, circumscribed, and often defeated by the whim, taste (or lack thereof), judgment (or lack thereof), and sheer clout of the paying client. Jonathan Ellery believes that all great graphic design should do the job for which they were commissioned: Communicate the message, reinforce the brand values, and sell ("solve problems"). In that sense, his philosophy and practice are rigorously, "form-follows-function" Bauhaus-ian. Still, as Shaughnessy persuasively argues, none of these is inherently or necessarily opposed to the graphic designer's desire for "personal creation". On the contrary, the more a graphic designer is given free rein (and trusted by the client), the greater the chance that the resulting design will succeed, that form is function. The 136 points of reference are Ellery's Bible, his highly personal canon of great graphic design. An absolute "must-have" title for Jonathan Ellery, art, photography, and graphic design collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed and dated (in the year of publication) in black pen on the front free endpaper by Jonathan Ellery. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. Ellery did NOT sign most copies of the book. Laid-in are the Souvenir Materials of Ellery's appearance in New York City to launch the book. This title is a contemporary classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed and dated copy of the Limited Edition available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 136 plates and doublespreads. One of the most brilliant graphic designer/artists of our time. A fine collectible copy. ISBN 0953373088. Signed by Author.
