Like any form of Indian art, this collection of stunning images is an all-enveloping feast for the senses. Sivakasi on the southern tip of India is where the sub-continent's major fireworks manufacturers are located and it is also a centre of the printing industry -- when the two come together, the result is a visual explosion. Searing colors, bizarre typography and hallucinogenic images combine to create a style of packaging that resembles nothing else on earth.
It's an art of noisy extremes, a volcanic eruption of creativity -- and all this, of course, before you even light the blue touch paper. Printed on boards in concertina form and packed in original fireworks boxes, this brilliantly original book celebrates a unique graphic language where understatement is suicidal, excess equals success and sheer spectacle is everything.About the Author:
Peter Nagy is an artist from New York who is currently based in New Delhi. From 19828 he was director of Gallery Nature Morte in New York's East Village and in 1997 he resurrected Nature Morte in New Delhi, where it continues to thrive. He has held many solo exhibitions of his work in galleries in the United States and Europe, and has been included in group exhibitions at institutions such as the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles and the Pompidou Centre in Paris. His writings on aesthetics have been published in "Artforum" and "Flash Art."
As heir to the first of the great Indian firework manufacturers, Adhipen Bose began work in his family's business, National Fireworks in Sivakasi, at the age of 12 and he now runs the company. He holds an MBA degree but is also a great teacher and student of the spiritual path to enlightenment, travelling widely around the world in pursuit of his philosophical and commercial goals.
Luigi Giannuzzi is a freelance packager based in Venice, Italy.
