These maps chart the social, historical and political development of London from its days as a burgeoning almost pastoral city in the 1740s to one of the busiest capital cities in the world. The collection includes excellent examples of maps by John Rocque (1746), Richard Horwood (1792-1799) and Christopher Greenwood (1827). It also contains early cycling maps, London Underground plans and even early copies of the 'now indispensible' A-Z. All the maps have been described carefully and many contain notes and bibliographical references. There: is a detailed essay by Ralph Hyde, short biographies of leading mapmakers and a brief essay on cartoographic techniques.
