Synopsis
Lavishly illustrated with 109 illustrations, 52 of them in color, reproducing the 12 scenes that make up the two series A Rake's Progress and An Election, together with many of the engravings - authorised as well as pirate - based on them. Many of the lively and graphic details contained in the paintings are reproduced, including five at the same size as the paintings, to give the reader an intimate feel for the paintings and the story they tell. There are also a number of comparative figures showing paintings by Hogarth and other artists which help to set the two series in their context.

About the Author
Christina Scull was born in 1942. She is a researcher and writer best known for her books about the works of JRR Tolkien. From 1971-1995 she served as Librarian at Sir John Soane's Museum in Lincoln's Inn Fields, London.
