FROM THE INTRODUCTION BY CHRIS POWER
Of all the physical marvels on this planet of ours, ocean waves are surely among the most beautiful and spectacular. Whether you’re a fully committed surfer or someone who just loves the ocean, we all share the same sense of wonder when we look at great photos of incredible waves. The parabolic curve of the lip as it patches and throws. The stacked lines of an incoming swell. The surreal silver cylinder of a glassy barrel, shot from underwater. The technicolour hues of a tropical sunrise reflected in a pristine wave face. Awesome. Amazing. Enticing. Inspiring. We can’t get enough.PIPELINE - HAWAII Photo: Ray Collins SECRET SPOT - DONEGAL BAY, IRELAND Photo: Roger Sharp AILEEN'S - COUNTY CLARE, IRELAND Photo: Mickey Smith JAMES HICK - THE RIGHT, WESTERN AUSTRALIA Photo: Spencer Hornby JACK ROBINSON - THE BOX, WESTERN AUSTRALIA Photo: Russell Ord STU JOHNSON - CLOUDBREAK, FIJI Photo: Lucia Griggi
Shooting photos from the water is the main reason surf photographers do what they do. Dramatic close-up images from the lineup convey the magic of surfing better than anything else. Of all the types of photography you can try, water shots are the hardest, yet most rewarding and fun. You’ll need a custom-built water housing (which can cost as much as your camera) plus a wetsuit and a pair of swim fins. When starting out it’s best to learn the ropes using a longer lens and work your way closer as you get more experienced. Go for a 100mm or 85mm lens initially, then move down to a 50mm, then a 24mm; finally you’ll be ready to use a fisheye for those killer in-the-tube shots. Shooting from the water is really dangerous if you don’t know what you’re doing – you’ll be dodging sledgehammer lips and fiberglass missiles the whole time, and then there are the currents, rocks and hold-downs to think about. Communication between you and the surfers you’re shooting is vital; explain what you want them to do, and how close they need to get.
