When Ellie and Finn learn that their parents are lost at sea they turn for help to their strange but likeable, Romany school teacher, Aloysius Myrdin. His humour, tricks and strange knowledge of things that no-one outside their family could possibly know, has captured their imagination. He is the natural person to turn to.
“Your parents have not yet drowned”, he assures Ellie and Finn, “but they are already falling into the past. Only those linked to them by the thread of essence – their children – can bring them back into the present.
“How?” they ask
“You must travel to the dimension known as Serenissima where the root of your family tree begins. Only there can you bend your parents’ fate back to ‘Present Time.’ Serenissima is the dimension where time is born and to where it returns at the end of each season to be renewed. Slip through the crack in time that occurs at the solstice tomorrow evening and ride the waves of the returning season back to Serenissima. From there you must go on, back through the lives of your ancestors, to the ‘Heart of Time’ where you may make your bid to bend your parents’ fate.”
Giving them a book of spells and incantations, a horseshoe key and a flute to aid them on their mission, he adds a warning: “You will meet danger and challenges and even yourselves in previous lives, but whatever you encounter, go on for will power is your strongest natural power. Go quickly for your Mother and Father are already becoming ghosts.” With his words still ringing in their ears, Ellie and Finn set off on their quest accompanied by Anne and Thomas, their best friends and their dog, Mr Pickles. So the adventure begins.
