My background is in study skills and English language teaching. I have taught in Spain, Hong Kong and the UK, and for the last 10 years, have specialised in academic writing. I have worked for numerous universities and further education colleges, plus for the British Council and International House; I have designed a number of writing courses, developed online resources and written for the publishers Pearson and Hachette; I have taught essay writing to teacher trainees, foreign students, school leavers, mature students and undergraduates. Within this diversity, I found many common needs when it comes to writing a college essay, but felt existing books did not cover these basics in a comprehensive way, so decided to write my own. My approach is very much that students learn best through practice rather than explanations, as for me, writing is a practical skill as much as an intellectual one, and one that anyone can master.
