About the Author:

My background is in English language teaching and study skills. I have taught in Spain, Hong Kong and the UK, and for the last 10 years, have specialised in academic writing. I have worked for numerous universities and further education colleges, plus for the British Council and International House; I have designed a number of writing courses, developed online resources and written for the publishers Pearson and Hachette; I have taught essay writing to teacher trainees, foreign students, school leavers, mature students and undergraduates. Within this diversity, I found many common needs when it comes to writing a college essay, but felt existing books did not cover these basics in a comprehensive way, so decided to write my own book. My approach is very much that explanations do not teach nearly as much as practice and models; hence the book has very short, intensive note sections but extensive exercise sections with teacher models throughout. For me, writing is a practical skill much more than an intellectual one, and one that anyone can master.
