This is the third edition of this groundbreaking book on Beating Heroin and the underlying conditions that lead to heroin addiction. The author Dr. Neil Beck is a medical doctor and the owner of one of the largest and most successful addiction treatment centers in Australia. It is an original and comprehensive step-by-step guide for users, friends and family of users, doctors and councellors.

The book is based on the successful treatment of thousands of heroin users over many years. It explains Dr. Beck’s Triple Diagnosis and Triple Therapy method as well as the 13 most common NeuroPsychoSocial disorders that he sees in his clinic and can lead to heroin addiction. It explains how your brain works and the origins of brain function problems. It includes case histories and copies of the many comprehensive diagnostic questionnaires created by Dr. Beck and his dedicated team.

If you have a heroin habit which is giving you hell and ruining your life, reading this book will help you to beat that habit. New advances in diagnosis and treatment have put light at the end of the tunnel for heroin addicted people. You can now be helped to beat heroin without too much suffering or difficulty if that is what you really want. Getting off heroin is now easy with Buprenorphine (or Suboxone). Staying off is more difficult and usually requires an effective team effort and your determination.

If you are a family member, a friend or a healthcare professional of a heroin user, reading this book will help you to understand why people with heroin problems are how they are and do what they do, and what can be done to help them. That will help them a great deal. They very much need you to understand them and their sicknesses, injuries, weaknesses and suffering. However remember that nothing can get an addict off their drug until they themselves are truly motivated and ready to get off it. Nagging won’t help but knowledge will and this book will provide you with the knowledge they need.

It is very difficult for an addict to stay off their drug unless they have a Dream of and can Say simply and clearly how they want their life to be after drugs. They also need to have been assisted to become much more healthy, capable and stronger, Neurologically, Psychologically and Socially. The Dream and the Simple Clear Statement are helped by counselling. The improved health, capability and strength are achieved by diagnosing and then treating with Triple Therapy the Disorders which always underlie addictions and which lead to substance abuse in the first place.

Nobody gets hooked on heroin unless they are suffering from serious Pre-existing Underlying NeuroPsychoSocial Disorders such as severe Anxiety Disorders, Major Depression, severe Sleep Disorders, Adult ADD, Manic Depressive (Bipolar) Disorder or Post NeuroPsychoSocial Injury Disorders, or from chronic severe physical pain. These Disorders must and can be successfully diagnosed and treated. Doing this gives people who have been hooked on drugs lasting freedom from those drugs, as well as a healthy happy normal life, which is what most of them truly want.

The starting points to understanding, diagnosing and treating the NeuroPsychoSocial Disorders that lead to addictions are firstly the realisation that the Brain is the Master Organ in all of us; secondly having a practical understanding of how the Human Brain Functions; and thirdly having a practical understanding of how the Human Brain can Malfunction. This book provides that understanding.

The Success Strategy described in Chapter 9 is the key to an addict becoming focussed, motivated, and successfully taking charge of his/her life.

In the past heroin addiction has often been a life sentence or a death sentence, but it needn’t be so any more. A period of addiction can now be turned into a stepping stone to a higher level of understanding, success and enrichment than a person may have achieved if they had never messed with drugs.

From the Publisher:

Beating Heroin is a book written by Dr Neil Beck, who treats 60 - 70 drug and alcohol patients each week, the great majority being heroin addicts. He is the owner of The Chemical Health Centre, an outpatient treatment centre for heroin and other drug sufferers. It is a book written for heroin sufferers, their families, friends and health carers. Dr Beck uses Buprenorphine and Group Therapy S.P.E.E.Q.E. detox to treat his patients. It is a far gentler, safer, more economical and less traumatic form of treatment than Rapid Detox. He also uses Naltrexone and other medications where necessary.

In Dr Beck's opinion substance abuse and addiction, are about some people having unusual/disturbed/distressing chemistry which causes these individuals suffering, and disturbed function/performance, sufficient to cause them to seek to relieve their distress, and to change their function/performance, by taking drugs.

In his book he discusses the great Buprenorphine breakthrough. Buprenorphine is a man made narcotic and is the least addictive mid strength narcotic there is. It is also a powerful antagonist (blocker) of the opioid nerve receptors. This means that it provides both moderate narcotic effect and relief, and also strongly blocks craving for and the effects of, other narcotics. Patients can be weaned off it without any difficulty or suffering, unlike methadone which is horrendously difficult and painful to get off. Addicts enthusiastically describe it as being far better than any other method of getting clean that they have tried. They are amazed at how quickly, easily and painlessly it gets them off heroin, morphine and oxycontin. Buprenorphine has been available for treating pain for twenty years in this country.

He also gives information on his clinical impression and the analysis of 121 consecutive cases which indicates that ADD is the commonest cause of substance abuse and addiction amongst his patients. However the commonest clinical conditions found amongst his patients are those of depression/ anxiety/ stress and insomnia; sometimes as the cause and sometimes as the effect of the addiction. 10% suffer from Manic Depressive (Bipolar) Disorder, with or without comorbid ADD.

The team at the Chemical Health Centre includes a psychiatrist who specializes in ADD/ADHD, a psychologist, a social worker and a nurse as well as Dr Beck. The book clearly explains how and why S.P.E.E.Q.E. detox works. It includes 8 case studies and gives a comparison of commonly used detox methods and information about Dr Beck's pioneering method of shared consultations. It also discusses chemicals and chemically disturbed people, narcotic tolerance and deaths following heroin treatments, a simple overview of how we human beings function and some of the ways in which we may malfunction. It includes a comprehensive chemical health record, an ADD diagnostic questionnaire and treatment record for adolescents and adults as well as a comprehensive bundle of strategies for beating heroin addiction. The book is an invaluable resource for anyone trying to understand their own or somebody elses addiction and how it can be treated easily, effectively, safely and economically.

From the Author:

Drug addiction sufferers are continually judged by others and may be their own harshest judges. More drug addiction sufferers have thanked me for being non-judgmental than have thanked me for anything else. Addicts are usually treated like dirt and are seldom treated with respect or consideration.

Substance abuse and addiction, are about some people having unusual/disturbed/distressing chemistry which causes these individuals suffering, and disturbed function/performance, sufficient to cause them to seek to relieve their distress, and to change their function/performance, by taking drugs.

New advances have now put "light at the end of the tunnel" for heroin users. You can now be helped to beat heroin comparatively easily, if that is what you really want. PLEASE READ the Amazon.com EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK section the Great Buprenorphine Breakthrough and the case studies of some patients. It may change your life or the life of your loved one or patient. I have included the stories of some of my patients in this section as they are what this is all about.
