Synopsis

This book is a collection of stories told by Abdullah over many years at the Universal Worship service of the Church of All.

The tales are from numerous religious and ethnic sources, demonstrating the Gnostic idea that the basic teaching behind all religions stems from the same Truth, even though outer words and concepts may differ. The book reflects ideas contained in Quest I, II and III and is very suitable for introducing children to Work ideas. It includes sixteen full-page illustrations.

Story from the book:

From 'Aims'
Once upon a time there was a monkey who was tied on a short rope to a peg fixed into the floor near the wall of a small room. A few feet above this peg there was a small hole in the wall (what we would call a niche, just a little place like a shelf). The monkey was very neglected and uncomfortable because nobody looked after him ...

As you know monkeys jump around in trees, so have what we call liberty. He would have had plenty of chance in his normal state to move around quite freely, but ... because the poor wretch was tied like this, he couldn't move away much or go to the toilet as he would normally do. So he had all this filth on the floor around him which made him miserable.

One day he was looking up and saw the hole in the wall. He thought, 'Well, it's no good sitting here in this filth, I'm going to try and get up there.' So he jumped up, but the rope was just too short for him to get into the hole, and he was pulled back down by the peg in the floor. He kept trying, and he jumped and jumped for days and days. He kept on doing it and one day, because of all the jumping that he had done, he was able to free the little post which had been driven into the floor. He got up into the niche in the wall, and ... although he didn't have complete freedom he was able to get out of the filth and dirt.

This story is showing you how a person should have the aim to get up into the little niche which is a place of refuge. That refuge is the place where we all want to get to. It is in our hearts, and is the way to jump into the Silence or Atman which is God. (pp. 4-5)
