About the Author

C.W. Meisterfeld is a canine psychoanalyst/therapist/trainer whose dog training experiences (as a teenager) began in 1944 and he turned professional ten years later. Meisterfeld is an A.K.C. licensed handler (retired) trainer for competitive Conformation-Obedience and Retriever trials. He is a breeder of German Shorthaired Pointers, Irish Setters, and Labrador Retrievers. A professional hunter s guide at exclusive Upland Game hunting clubs and the pioneer of canine psychoanalysis and psychological dog training (1963), Meisterfeld teaches canine behavioral psychology in California s colleges and Universities. His philosophy of Mutual Respect and Train Without Pain has earned him the Canine Distinction Award for A.K.C. Obedience (1957) and National Retriever Championships for three consecutive years 1962, 1963, and 1964 with a perfect score of 500 points in 1962. Meisterfeld is the first canine psychoanalyst to be certified as an expert Witness in the judicial system of the United States (California s Superior Court, 1982).

Reviews

An untrained dog "has only his instinctive behaviors, many of which are unacceptable and very dangerous." Canine behavior analyst Meisterfeld shows owners how to teach their dogs to curb their instincts and to obey. His technique, always positive, never dominant, fosters a relationship of mutual trust and respect without fear. Meisterfeld takes readers through eight imaginary sessions of basic obedience. He explains each exercise, points out its usefulness, and corrects errors made by fictional handlers. Libraries that already have Linda Colflesh's Making Friends ( LJ 10/15/90) or Barbara Handler's Positively Obedient (Alpine, 1987) can skip this. Others should consider purchasing it.
